San Diego

I’ve been a San Diegan for over ten years now, but I still very much feel like I’m getting to know the city. I post about my explorations and thoughts about my still “newish” home.

Kettner and Vine – San Diego

October 15, 2024   |   San Diego

A new homeless shelter is in the planning stages here in San Diego, and as expected, the opposition has come out in force with their lawn signs. The new shelter will be constructed at Kettner and Vine. Initially I had assumed this was somewhere in Mission Hills, since that’s where I have seen the signs, […]

I finally took a little trip to Civita Park and the surrounding neighborhood. The neighborhood is still a work in progress but it’s an encouraging development that we need more

I’ve been wanting to try a full weekend adventure in the desert for a couple years. It’s a decent drive from San Diego to get to Anza Borrego

Idyllwild Weekend

It’s easy to question your choices when you’re shivering and slowly removing soaked articles of clothing while sitting alone in your car.

I keep seeing proposals for the San Diego Sports Arena District (like this one). Some of them are great. I would actually love to see some bigger thinking here as well. The I-8 west of I-5, which lies just north of the proposed Sports Arena District, is a fairly worthless stretch of freeway, travelling a couple of miles before transitioning into neighborhood arterials. It does help get people to the beach faster, which I guess is a good thing, but it's also some nice real estate right along the San Diego River that could be a pretty nice neighborhood.   I occasionally ride my bike on the path between the freeway and river -- it's enjoyable, except for the freeway right there. What a wasted space.

Generally when it’s a bit drizzly in San Diego, I want to hang out at home. Those rainy days are a rare treat

South Ridge San Jacinto

May 28, 2017   |   Adventure, San Diego

Being a parent who loves to get out on outdoor adventures can be challenging.  While we’ve successfully taken our little one on numerous hikes and backpacking trips (like this one on the Jennie Lake Loop, and this one to Blue Lake), it’s often times difficult to hit that point of physical exertion where you’re exhausted and […]

Hey San Diego: Utilize Your Waterfront Better!

July 13, 2016   |   San Diego, Urbanity and Architecture

San Diego has some of the best weather in the entire US, and being right on the coast, and a downtown that is adjacent to water, it has tremendous assets that other cities just can’t match.  It’s interesting that until recently, downtown San Diego has done a pretty incredible job of cutting itself off from […]

San Diego Urban Canyon Explorations

February 8, 2015   |   Adventure, San Diego

I love to get out and explore the more wild areas surrounding wherever I live, but I sometimes overlook the good stuff that’s really close to home. We decided this week to explore two canyons, both within walking distance of home. Maple Canyon On Saturday we did a four mile loop, making our way down […]
