Thanksgiving Adventure
It’s probably the climate. Thanksgiving was one of my favorite holidays growing up. I think even at a young age I appreciated the simplicity and quietness of the day. In the PNW where I grew up, it was oftentimes rainy, so it was always a cozy holiday, where you would relax around the house while smelling the turkey cook.
Now, living in southern California, Thanksgiving doesn’t have quite the same flavor. I must admit, its nice sitting on the patio on a nice, warm fall day to enjoy the Thanksgiving feast, but it’s not quite the same. So last year, we took advantage of the long weekend to take a trip to Zion. It was fantastic, but since we were out camping, we didn’t really think to do the do the Thanksgiving dinner thing. I didn’t realize until later that it could be done.
This past year, we did a repeat trip, but I brought our Ooni pizza oven. I of course used it for pizza as well, but it worked well for a little chicken breast-stuffing bake, and to finish our sweet potatoes, which we started cooking in the fire.
Other than forgetting some ingredients for rolls (which I was also planning to cook in the oven), our camping Thanksgiving dinner was great.
I’m not sure what our plans are for next Thanksgiving, but doing our feast in nature somewhere doesn’t sound too bad.
