UX & Web Design #2 – Website Icons, Home Page Hero Work, and Web App Design/Build Updates

Website Home Page Hero Section Updates
I so far haven’t been totally happy with my Zindash home page, so I’ve been working this week on updating the style a little bit. Originally, I had more of an image for the hero section, but I wasn’t really caring for it, so now I’m just doing more of a “dropped” in image. I’ve also been working on a new light theme for the app, which makes a big difference for the screenshot here. For some reason, I really want to do a dark-themed website for this project (probably since I don’t get to do them too often), but since the current version of the app is also dark, it was all just too much. I may revisit the cyan coloring on the page, since it doesn’t really appear anywhere in the app, and so it seems a little random. Perhaps I’ll end up with just blacks and grays, but I do kind of like it. Perhaps I can work back and forth between the website and the app to find something that feels a little more relevant to each.

Website Icons
I spent a little time this week working on the a few icons for a Service Providers page. The bulk of the page was built out last week, but I needed to spend a little time dialing in the icons. The most complicated one was the icon for “Dedicated Experts” — I had originally proposed some sort of a clipboard icon, but there was a request for something involving a person. Usually, I find people-icons a little hard to pull off, I think they can come off as being a little too amateurish, but I’m pretty happy with how this one turned out. She’s a little playful which I like, without being too goofy.

Web App Design/Build Updates and Cleanup
I actually love this web app project, which generates information on how to distribute samples for RNA processing into a sample loading table. It’s an ongoing project that continues to improve and get refined. This past week we added an aditional Kit Chemistry option, which slightly modifies the calculations in comparison to the older chemistry (the entire app is pretty complex, with calculations that are pretty complicated). I was happy with my coding for this one, which made the change fairly trivial, basically just adding a few additional parameters to the product settings. There will likely be some additional changes to follow fairly soon here, which will involve some additional challenges to solve, but also some opportunities for some nice UX features and functionality.
